What is all this babble of speaking in tongues, anyway? Do we really need them or did God Himself miss the mark in His dealings with Man? This articles covers's tongues Glossolalia phenomenon, what it is, why God gives it to us and just what He expects us to do with it. More importantly, it covers what God expects of you dear Reader, regarding these 2000 year old tongues of fire. If you diss the tongues of today, you are dissing God Himself! This is the wrong driver's seat to find yourself in, when you meet Him face-to-face.
What is the prayer language? The prayer language according to the Prophet Joel, is one manifestation of the Holy Spirit being poured out upon all flesh. This is because when people receive their unknown tongue, they prophesy. According to the ApostlePaul in 1 Corinthians 14, Verse 2 states that when a Pentecostal speaks in unknown tongues, they are actually speaking not to the man or woman standing next to them, but they are in all actuality, literally speaking to God! It also says that the reason the Pentecostal man or woman is not speaking to the person to their right or left, is because the person to their right or left cannot understand the words being spoken tongues or.
Verse 2 says, "For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. "
You see? It says the prayer language is used to speak to the almighty God. To men and women around the speaker, albeit pray-er, only stammering lips of unintelligible words arebeing uttered. The Apostle Paul refers to these as mysteries, unintelligible words or the meaning of which sounds cannot be understood by Man.
That's why if you are in a Pentecostal Church and you overhear those around you speaking in tongues and praying to the God of holiness they need, they don't really care if you overhear their prayers or not. They know that you will not understand the meaning of the prayers of the personal confession of sins, the shameful profound "supplication of the heart and fathomless desire of their spirit to worship He who shed His Blood for them.
Why does God give a prayer language to those who thirst for Him? Because God wanted to tip the balance scales when it came to faithful men and women testifying of His goodness on the Earth.
It isthe goodness of God that brings repentance to men and women, and it is the will of God that all men and women of their wrongdoings repent, turn from their wicked direction of serving the Adversary, and begin listening once and for all to the Lord God who has made a high-way in the desert for them to be eternally saved.
What does God expect you to do with your prayer language in today's chaotic, global society? He expects you to use it to speak to Him, first and foremost! He expects you to use the speaking in tongues to worship Him each and every day, both in and out of formal church settings. He expects you to prophesy with the intended focus being to exhort, edify and encourage and uplift your Body of Christ's Brothers and Sisters.
Dear Reader, Understand that God's underlyingteaching in 1 Cor 14 is that His form of prophesy is two-fold:
1. When God tells you to speak words of wisdom to specific someone in the language they grew up using native language, this is prophecy.
2. When God tells you to publicly stand up in a formal church setting and loudly speak in a prayer language way above the voices of all the others, and then to interpret or translate the unknown tongues, this too is prophecy; it is the equivalent of simply giving the people a message from God in the well-known words they can immediately understand.
The church world not really realizing these two forms of prophecy above, is the real reason that there has been so much confusion and splits over the use of the speaking in tongues gifts in the church today. To receive tongues, you need tosubmit to God 100% as a Christian; the reason only 5% speak in tongues, if even that many, is because few want to ride shotgun for the Holy Spirit. We always seem to default to ". .. we want the wheel, and we want it now!"
What is the prayer language again? For the New Testament's Apostle Paul, it is you speaking directly to God! If you want to do this, I suggest you get super hungry and thirsting for His presence and go after your own personal prayer language. God is not a respecter of persons; you know this! So just do it with your shoes on!
